SUMMER WHEAT

Summer Wheat creates vibrant paintings, sculptures, and installations that merge materiality, figuration, and abstraction. Inspired by historical and contemporary sources, her work reflects diverse human experiences, drawing from ancient art, medieval tapestries, Renaissance etchings, and modernist abstraction. By challenging traditional hierarchies and stereotypes, she offers more inclusive portrayals of daily life across history. Her works are featured in prominent collections, including the Dallas Museum of Art, de Young Museum, Pérez Art Museum Miami, and the Speed Art Museum.

A recent experience that inspired you creatively?

I travel often, and got to attend a residency in Turkey during November of 2024. One of the highlights was visiting a factory where artists made different glass objects by hand. I’ve been interested in that material and working more with it.

Favourite way to get out of a creative rut?

I often meditate before working on a painting so I begin with a focused mindset. I have a yoga mat in my studio, and am able to take a moment to be present so that I’m able to do my best work.

The last place you visited that you can't stop thinking about?

Egypt! I’m lucky to be able to visit again later this year, and I cannot wait!

Go-to activity for unwinding after a long day?

I have a ritual of walking at night. It helps me renew my creative energy, and reset mentally after working on different projects throughout the day.

Best gift you've ever received?

The best gift I've ever received is my beloved Loewe elephant bag. It's a small pouch that fits my phone and essentials, and it travels with me everywhere like a best friend. I can't live without it!
